"The only horror in this book is how horrible it was"

I don't think I am going to waste much time on this review. This book felt like it was trying so hard to get picked up to be turned into an actual movie. There was no subtelty (necessary in a thriller) it felt like she was emailing a director on how a scene should look and sound like. The Mexican history and background was nice but at some point felt like it was a copy and paste from a Wikipedia section? Its as if everytime I passed the Alamo I went into a long monologue about what the Alamo represents to me, just completely unnecessary details. The characters were completely flat? They circled into the same one note THE ENTIRE TIME. The only horror in this book is how horrible it was.

I LOVED Mexican Gothic (I have even read her other books) and perhaps I was expecting too much from Silvia Moreno but this was at best meant for a YA audience.

At the end of the book she reveals that this was actually based on a short story that she wrote. The short story was about a sex cult that watches haunted porn together. The protaganist starts having steamy scary dreams. The plot in those 3 pages was 10X better than this. In my opinion this book is a cash grab/presssure from her publisher after the success of Mexican Gothic.
